Philosophy
Meadow Hawk is a land based, experiential center for study,
work, and play for 12-15 year olds, developed from
Dr. Maria Montessori's Erdkinder (Land Children) model.
"We have called these children the "Erdkinder"
because they are learning about civilization
through its origin in agriculture...work on
the land is an introduction both to nature
and civilization and gives a limitless field
for scientific and historic studies...there
is an opportunity to learn both academically
and through actual experience what are the
elements of social life."
Dr. Montessori believed that "our first
teacher will be the child himself," and that
we must "follow the child"and his or her
interests as they choose the tools, skills, and
experiences with which to grow. Meadow Hawk is
founded on principles of respect--for each other
and for the earth on which we live. It seeks to
create a challenging, stimulating, and fun
enviroment in which young people and their guides
(teachers) can explore the world together; learning
about themselves, each other, and their global community.
Early adolescence is a time of seeking and
questing, a time of great change and energy.
Doing meaningful work in the classroom and on the
land in student-directed projects and, from that
knowledge, a sense of competency and of self-confidence.
"The consciousness of knowing how to make
oneself useful, and how to help human kind in many
ways, fills the soul with noble confidence."
